Eric Olsen
Located in Corona del Mar, California, Olsen’s small shack was reimagined into a sleek two story house featuring a slew of tech-friendly perks including a nifty home theater, a snazzy den, and a razzle dazzle primary suite. Not to mention, Olsen’s design firm, Molly Wood Garden Design, outfitted the place with tiered planters. A pair of marbles and an adobe smack dab in the center of the house are the icing on the cake.
A quick perusal of the kitchen’s many nooks and crannies revealed a number of impressive feats. A tidbit is that Olsen’s team of professionals excavated the house’s foundation 11 feet above street level, thereby allowing natural light to pour into the living room and kitchen alike. Another feat was the construction of a large sunken courtyard, which is arguably the focal point of the house.
Shavonda Gardner
Having two teenage kids in a small space is no easy feat, but Shavonda Gardner knows how to make it work. The Gardners recently downsized from a 2,400-square-foot house in Sacramento, California, to a 1,200-square-foot cottage. The move prompted them to give their kids two “real” bedrooms.
In addition to making the most of the small space, Shavonda and her wife Naomi have also made bold decor choices. They’ve painted the ceiling in both kids’ rooms. They’ve also hung African motifs on walls and combined them with island-inspired accents.
They’ve incorporated vintage home furnishings into their decor, such as this old-English style table from England. They also bought a reclaimed wood table from a local salvage shop.
One of the biggest challenges of living in a small space is limiting the amount of stuff the kids bring home. Shavonda is a big fan of making the most of what you’ve got. She suggests using a magnetic knife rack to hold sharp knives, rather than keeping them in a drawer. This is safer and more efficient.
Hecker Guthrie
Using their expertise in architecture and interior design, Hecker Guthrie has produced a diverse range of projects spanning both residential and commercial space. Using a mix of modern and classical designs, the firm’s work is a celebration of style.

One of the more impressive projects Hecker Guthrie completed was the redesign of a grand Victorian family home in Prahran. They updated the space by adding in contemporary furnishings and adding geometric tile to the entryway. Hecker Guthrie also took the opportunity to restore the original stained glass window in the front room. Their attention to detail was evident as they also restored the original pine flooring.

Founded by interior designer Brigette Romanek, Romanek Design Studio is a luxury design firm that specializes in style and comfort. Their services include residential and commercial design solutions. They are known for presenting unique design concepts that bring a sense of excitement to any space.
